Tips for Writing Effective PgMP Program Experience Summaries
Strategies to increase the acceptance chances of your PgMP application

One of the requirements when applying for the Program Management (PgMP) Certification exam is to submit five summaries related to your program management experience. These summaries are reviewed as part of the PgMP Panel Review process, where experienced program managers review your program management-related professional experience based on the response that you provide in these program summaries. It’s, therefore, very crucial that you work to submit high-quality program management experience summaries or risk your PgMP application getting rejected. PMI mentions the following about the “Program Management Experience Summaries”
“On the PgMP application, you will be required to record detailed descriptions regarding your professional program management experience in the Program Management Experience Summaries. For each of these questions, indicate which program you are choosing to use as an example in your response. Be thorough, yet concise, in your response… (as you answer the questions.)”
Since the passing of my PgMP a few years ago, I get contacted often by applicants to help them through this process by reviewing their submissions and program experience summaries. In this article, I would like to share some of the common mistakes that PgMP applicants make when preparing their program summaries. Knowing these will help you to avoid these common mistakes.
Program managers are required to submit five program summaries related to the five domains namely (1) Strategic Program Management, (2) Stakeholder Engagement, (3) Program Lifecycle, (4) Program Governance, and (5) Benefits Management. PMI provides applicants with a choice to answer one of two questions related to each program management domain. Each question must be answered in a program summary format of 500 words or less.
